Explore the legendary Russky Bridge and Russky Island
The world's longest cable-stayed span, bays with sandy beaches and early 20th-century forts — all twenty minutes from central Vladivostok.
The Russky Bridge is not merely an engineering feat; it is the entrance to another Vladivostok. The bridge crosses the Eastern Bosphorus strait and connects the city to Russky Island: 1,885 metres in total and a 1,104-metre main span — a world record among cable-stayed bridges. The pylons rise 320 metres, and on a clear day the road over the water is an attraction in its own right.
For most guests the day on the island becomes the highlight of the whole trip — and there is almost never enough time.
The bridge itself
Cross it twice. In daylight you see the scale: the water below, the cables, the span running out towards the island. At sunset the bridge is lit up and becomes a glowing arc over the strait — one of the best photographs you can take home from Vladivostok.
What to do on Russky Island
- Novik Bay — long and calm, with sandy beaches and clear water
- Cape Vyatlina and the southern lighthouses — rugged nature and the open ocean
- The forts of the Vladivostok fortress — early 20th-century concrete works, part of a vast defence system
- The FEFU campus — a modern university town on the shore
- The Primorsky Aquarium — one of the largest in the world, excellent with children
- Viewpoints looking back at the bridge from the island side
How to plan the day
A full day is the right shape. Cross the bridge in the morning and stop at a viewpoint, then Novik Bay and the beach, lunch with seafood, and the aquarium or the forts in the afternoon. Head back before sunset so you catch the evening light on the bridge.
If you only have three days in Vladivostok, the island takes one of them entirely. If you can spare two, you will fit in the nature, the forts and the beach without rushing.
The bridge is not the road to the island — it is the attraction. Cross it at least twice: by day and at sunset.
Practical notes
- Transport: easiest by car with a driver or by taxi; buses run but infrequently
- Bring: water, a hat and a windproof jacket — island weather turns quickly
- Swimming: best in July and August, when Novik Bay warms up fastest
- Time: at least a full day; two days to do it comfortably
- Tip: weekdays are noticeably quieter than weekends
