Discover the rich history of Vladivostok's Arsenyev Museum

The oldest museum in the Russian Far East, the legacy of the explorer Vladimir Arsenyev, and collections that explain the whole region in one visit.

The Arsenyev Museum is where Vladivostok stops being a set of beautiful views and becomes a story. The Primorye State United Museum, named after V. K. Arsenyev, was founded in 1884 and is considered the oldest museum in the Russian Far East. Its collections have been assembled for more than a century — expeditions, finds, documents and photographs that together form a portrait of a vast region.

If Vladivostok gives you only one rainy day, spend it here.

Why the museum is named after Arsenyev

Vladimir Arsenyev was an officer, explorer and writer, author of Dersu Uzala, the book that brought him worldwide recognition. He described the nature and peoples of the Ussuri region, travelling it end to end in the early 20th century. The museum holds what he and his contemporaries brought back: everyday objects, weapons, maps and photographs.

What to see

  • The archaeology and ethnography of Primorye: from ancient cultures to the region's indigenous peoples
  • The history of Vladivostok as a port, a fortress and Russia's eastern gateway
  • Collections connected with China and the countries of East Asia
  • Temporary exhibitions — the programme changes several times a year
  • The building itself on Svetlanskaya Street is an architectural monument

How to visit

Allow 1.5 to 2 hours. With children, start with the ethnographic halls and the cases you can inspect up close, and leave the city's history for the second half. The permanent displays give you a solid foundation, after which everything you see in the city makes more sense.

An English or Chinese audio guide is not always available and labels are not fully translated. That is why we usually accompany groups with our own guide, who translates the key stories and connects the exhibits to what you have already seen on the route.

Beautiful views last a day; stories last for years. The Arsenyev Museum gives Vladivostok a second dimension.
